An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada on Thursday sentenced a 30-year-old man, Mark Ughiobhe, of Phase 3, to four months in prison for “screening an offender.”
The prosecutor, Cpl. Usman Umar, told the court that Ughiobhe, who stood surety for one Nwabikibeh Chukwuka at the Gwagwalada Police Station, failed to produce him when needed.
He said Chukwuka, resident near Assembly of God, Gwagwalada, was involved in a case of criminal breach of trust and cheating to the tune of N154, 000.
Umar said that the offence contravened section 167 of the Penal Code.
The surety would be liable to five years in prison without an option of fine, if found guilty.
Ughiobhe pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for forgiveness, adding that he would take extra steps to produce Nwabikibeh.
The Presiding Judge, Ahaji Alhassan Kusherki, sentenced him to four months in prison with an option of N 20,000 fine.
Kusherki also ordered the convict to pay N154, 000 as compensation to the nominal complainant whose identity was not revealed during the hearing. (NAN)
