The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, called on athletes to embrace discipline, fairness and professionalism as the 14th Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics commenced in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The CGC, who doubles as the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, spoke at the opening ceremony held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom, stating that “the annual tournament has continued to serve as a vital platform for discovering and nurturing wrestling talents across the country.”

CGC Adeniyi described the tournament as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s sporting future, stressing that wrestling has remained one of the country’s most consistent sources of global recognition.

“This Classics is not just a competition; it is a platform for growth, for discovery, and for building the next generation of champions. Wrestling continues to bring honour to Nigeria, and we must sustain that momentum.” He said.

He noted that recent developments within the sport point to a renewed commitment to grassroots development, adding that structured youth programmes are being strengthened to translate long-term plans into measurable results.

“Our focus remains on the grassroots. We are building from the foundation, ensuring that young talents are identified early and properly developed to compete at national and international levels.” CGC Adeniyi said.

Highlighting progress made over the past year, he noted that wrestling was featured for the first time at the Nigerian University Games, a move he said was designed to broaden the talent pool and integrate the sport into the academic environment.

“We are expanding opportunities. The inclusion of wrestling at NUGA is a deliberate step towards discovering talents within our universities and giving them a pathway into professional competition.” He stated.

CGC Adeniyi also referenced Nigeria’s participation in the maiden West African Wrestling Championship, where athletes and officials gained valuable exposure and technical experience.

“We are not only competing; we are learning, adapting and improving. The exposure from regional competitions is critical to our overall development.” He added.

On athlete welfare, the Customs boss announced that all registered participants at the Classics would receive an allowance of N25,000 each, alongside enhanced prize money for medal winners. At the same time, participating teams would benefit from logistical support.

“We recognise the efforts of our athletes. This support is to encourage you to remain committed and focused as you pursue excellence in the sport.” CGC Adeniyi said.

He urged competitors to uphold the integrity of the sport by adhering strictly to rules and avoiding practices that could undermine fair competition.

“Discipline is key. You must compete fairly, respect the rules and stay away from anything that could tarnish your career or the image of the sport.” He cautioned.

The CGC commended the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his sustained support for wrestling development, noting that such commitment has been instrumental in sustaining the Classics over the years.

“We must appreciate the consistency of the Bayelsa State Government and other stakeholders whose support has kept this competition alive and growing.” He said.

He formally declared the tournament open, urging participants to compete in the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence.

The Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics, which began on March 25, is expected to run until April 1, 2026, drawing athletes, coaches and officials from across the country.
