Chairman, Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, Hon Jafaru Yakubu has said that Chinese New celebration event would enhance cultural exchange and mutual respect between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.
Hon. Yakubu who made this known Saturday in Abuja while delivering his speech during the 2024 Chinese New Year Temple Fair hosted by Embassy of China and China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, sponsored by China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria noted that the temple fair is an age long celebration that brings family together in love, peace and harmony.
He explained that this year’s celebration will also provide an opportunity for Nigerians to learn about Chinese culture and tradition.
His words, “This event will not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of China, but diverse culture of China and Nigeria. As we continue to strengthen our ties with China, it will lead to cultural exchange and mutual respect that improves our relationship.
“It is my believe that this event will foster greater understanding and appreciation of our relations which will be a stepping stone for robust relation in future”.
Hon. Yakubu thanked the Ambassador of China, Amb. Cui Jianchun and members of Chinese community for their support in making the event a success. He announced that Nigeria would be holding a similar event to commemorate Chinese New Year with the aim of improving the relations between the two nations.
Also speaking, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Cui Jianchun, said the relationship between Nigeria and China was auspicious and based on unity and shared future.
His words, “This year, 2024 is tagged the year of the dragon, in Chinese culture, dragon symbolize three things, one is auspiciousness, second is the wisdom, and the third is about strength. I believe in our relationship with Nigeria. We have been auspicious, applied wisdom, and together, we have shown that there is strength in unity.
Continuing, Amb. Cui described Chinese New Year celebration as an important Chinese celebration that brings family together to reflect on the past year, celebrate what they have achieved while ushering in the new year.
The Director General, National Council for Art and Culture (NCAC) and President, World Crafts Council (African Region) Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, said the celebration New Year was significant in many respects given the fact that it was a celebration of Chinese rich Culture and tradition which date back to several centuries.
“It is therefore a memorable moment for the re-enactment of Chinese rich tradition. China, as we know, is reputed for its diverse culture and its fascinating manifestations.
“The festival therefore is a testimony to the fact that China guides very jealously its cultural heritage and traditional values. It is noteworthy that Beijing has top 10 Temple Fairs popular at the Chinese New Year, This Temple Fairs, spread in different locations, offer opportunities for ritual prayers for peace and prosperity, entertainment, sale of snacks, re-enactment of worship ceremonies, display of a rich variety of traditional and modern entertainments, sale of food, Art and Craft products, etc.” he stated.
