The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, in collaboration with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Monday convened a diplomatic Youth Cultural Exchange Seminar for youth in Abuja.
Organized by the China Cultural Centre in Abuja under the theme “China-Africa Community with a Shared Future,” the dialogue united diplomats, government officials, and scores of young innovators to co-create an economic roadmap focused on advanced technology and international trade.
Delivering the keynote address, Chinese Minister Zhou Hongyou noted that 2026 represents a historic milestone, marking the 70th anniversary of China-Africa diplomatic relations and the 55th anniversary of bilateral ties between China and Nigeria.
To turn the outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit into practical development, Minister Zhou announced a sweeping trade policy update effective May 1st of this year, China started implementing zero tariffs on all imports originating from 53 African nations maintaining diplomatic ties with Beijing.
Invoking an interconnected global vision from Chinese President Xi Jinping, Zhou said: “Amidst the raging torrents of a global crisis, countries are not riding separately in some 190 small boats, but are rather all in a giant ship on which our shared destiny hinges.”
Zhou challenged the young attendees to step up as the primary “doers” of this international partnership, promising sustained institutional collaboration between the Embassy and Nigeria’s youth ministry.
Responding on behalf of the Nigerian government, Mr. Despan Kwardem, Director of Education and Youth Development at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, commended the strategic insights generated by the seminar’s breakout groups.
The sessions—divided into Public Diplomacy, Pragmatic Economic Cooperation, and People-to-People Exchanges—concluded that youth-led enterprise is the essential engine for future economic growth.
Kwardem challenged the audience to rethink the traditional limits of bilateral relations, urging them to view cooperation as a mutual building process rather than a dependency on foreign aid.
“Communities are no longer bound by geographical setups or GPS.
“Communities have moved on and it’s digital. You can have the health technology community ecosystem; you can have the artificial intelligence ecosystems and communities,” he stated.
The practical dimensions of the seminar resonated strongly with members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Abuja, who participated across various panels
One of the participants, Alhasan Isu emphasized that bridging communication gaps is foundational to international collaboration.
He observed that simple steps, like learning the Chinese greeting “Ni Hao,” act as vital tools for breaking down cultural barriers.
Pointing to the common presence of “Made in China” consumer electronics in Nigerian households, Isu noted that sustainable national growth requires Nigerian youth to transition from passive consumers to active participants in the global tech ecosystem.
Similarly, another participant, Abiodun Grace focused on the critical need for personal and professional readiness.
Prompted by a panelist’s account of missing an international scholarship due to a lack of preparation, Grace warned that opportunities can only be leveraged when early groundwork has been laid.
Furthermore, she cited China’s disciplined five-year development planning cycles as an administrative model for Nigerian youth to emulate through proactive career planning and early academic research.
The seminar concluded with a formal pledge from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to implement policies targeting advanced digital skills, technological capacity building, and marketplace adaptability.
As diplomatic relations between Abuja and Beijing deepen, both nations finalized the session with the shared understanding that the cross-border networks established by today’s youth will form the technological and economic infrastructure connecting China and Africa tomorrow.
