In accordance with the divine guidance of Qur’an 18:28, the wise choice of companions is highly emphasized. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, commands us to keep the company of those who call upon Him sincerely and consistently, those whose presence nurtures our spiritual growth and reminds us of our true purpose.
The translation of the verse reads:
“And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornments of worldly life. And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desires, and whose affair is ever in neglect.”
From this verse, it becomes clear that true companionship lies in the company of those who remind us of Allah, encourage righteousness, and guide us away from heedlessness and vain desires.
In a similar spirit, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) advised: “When you see a servant of Allah who is disciplined, disinclined to worldly affairs, and speaks little, remain in his company, for goodness is inspired into his heart from Allah”.
This Prophetic wisdom teaches the value of silence and reflection. Indeed, silence is golden, it preserves wisdom, refines thought, and nurtures peace within the soul.
Modern research interestingly supports this spiritual truth, showing that silence stimulates new cell growth in the brain, enhances memory, and calms the body and mind. It helps us process emotions and gain clarity of situations, teaching us that we should speak only when our words carry more value than silence.
Likewise, science confirms that the right company fosters mental health, emotional balance, and overall peace of mind. The people around us significantly influence how we respond to challenges, achieve goals, and maintain inner calm.
‘It is often said and truly so, that the company you keep determines who you become. If you surround yourself with three ambitious people, you’ll soon be the fourth. If you surround yourself with three kind-hearted people, you’ll soon be the fourth. If you surround yourself with three creative thinkers, you’ll soon be the fourth. And if you surround yourself with three lazy people, you’ll soon be the fourth’.
Our companions shape our mindset; our mindset influences our habits; and our habits determine our destiny.
In today’s world driven by appearances and faked smiles, illusions not only mask the truth but the true colours of men around us. There is no doubting the fact that overshadowed sincerity, outward beauty, wealth, and worldly pursuit can easily distract us from what truly matters. Behind these illusions often lie deceit and emptiness. Hence, we are urged to choose our circle wisely, to walk with those whose lives reflect discipline, faith, humility, and a deep connection with Allah.
May Allah (SWT) grant us the wisdom to keep good companions who remind us of Him, strengthen our faith, and walk with us on the path of righteousness.
I pray that wherever you find yourself today, the mercy of Allah will be your shield, His protection will be your comfort, and His blessings will be your constant companion.
May every good you seek come to you with ease, and may Allah guide, bless, and uplift you in all your endeavours.
