CHRICED: Akpoti’s Suspension Was Intentional

The Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED has criticised Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over actions it says undermine women’s participation in politics, raising concerns about gender discrimination at the highest levels of government.

CHRICED in a statement on Thursday condemning Akpabio’s alleged treatment of female lawmakers, particularly Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The senator had previously accused Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, of sexual harassment—an allegation he has denied.

CHRICED’s Executive Director, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said Akpabio’s conduct sent a dangerous signal about the treatment of women in Nigerian politics.

“It is crucial for leaders in influential positions to exemplify positive behaviour and to treat their colleagues with respect and dignity, irrespective of gender,” Zikirullahi said.

The controversy follows Akpabio’s recent remarks referring to some female senators as “nightclub women”, comments that sparked widespread criticism.

CHRICED suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate was part of a deliberate effort to silence her.

“The timing of Senator Akpabio’s actions, occurring shortly after his ‘nightclub’ remarks, suggests a premeditated agenda against Senator Natasha,” the organisation stated.

The rights group warned that such incidents could deter women from seeking leadership positions, reinforcing a culture of exclusion and discrimination in Nigerian politics.

CHRICED has called on the Senate to take disciplinary measures against Akpabio and implement policies to prevent similar incidents in the future. It also reiterated the need for a political environment where women can participate without fear of harassment or discrimination.

“Women in leadership roles must be able to perform their responsibilities without the fear of harassment, belittlement, or disrespect,” Zikirullahi said.

The organisation vowed to continue advocating for gender equality in Nigerian politics, insisting that all leaders be held accountable for their actions.

“Senator Akpabio’s actions are unacceptable, and we will not rest until women can participate in politics and public life without fear of discrimination or mistreatment,” the group said.
