The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture amid rising insecurity across the country.

The organisation also urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to step aside over ongoing controversies surrounding the commission, warning that failure to do so could undermine public confidence ahead of the next general elections.

The Executive Director of CHRICED, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the organisation’s “State of the Nation” address to the media.

Zikirullahi expressed concern over the persistent security challenges facing various parts of the country, noting that the current security framework requires urgent reforms to effectively address emerging threats.

He said that the increasing political tensions among parties, coupled with controversies involving INEC, pose a serious risk to Nigeria’s democratic process.

“The security architecture of the country must be urgently reviewed to ensure it is responsive and capable of addressing the growing threats to lives and property,” he said.

Zikirullahi further stressed the need for transparency and accountability within INEC, urging its chairman to step aside in order to safeguard the credibility of the electoral body.

According to him, maintaining public trust in democratic institutions is critical, especially as the country approaches another election cycle.

He called on relevant authorities to take proactive steps to strengthen national security and restore confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
