CITAD Condemns Alleged Police Assault on Journalist in Bauchi

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has condemned the alleged assault on an Albarka Radio reporter, Mohammed Adamu, by police officers during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Executive Director, Y.Z. Ya’u, CITAD described the incident as a serious violation of press freedom and an attack on journalists’ rights.

According to the organisation, Adamu was at the event to carry out his professional duties when he was reportedly stopped by police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Jamilu Kabir. Despite identifying himself as a journalist and attempting to access the designated media area, he was allegedly beaten by the officers.

CITAD said the reporter sustained head injuries during the incident and had to seek medical attention.

The organisation noted that such actions undermine democratic governance and the rule of law, stressing that journalists play a vital role in informing the public and ensuring accountability.

“This incident is not isolated but reflects a troubling pattern of harassment and violence against journalists by security agencies,” the statement said, adding that such acts create fear and hinder the media from operating freely.

CITAD called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, as well as the identification and prosecution of all officers involved.

It also demanded adequate compensation and protection for the affected journalist, alongside improved training and clear directives for security agencies to respect press freedom.

The organisation urged the Inspector-General of Police and relevant authorities to take decisive steps to address what it described as a growing trend of attacks on journalists across the country.

CITAD emphasised that safeguarding press freedom is essential to protecting democracy and ensuring that citizens’ rights are upheld.
