The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has raised urgent concerns over the escalating abuse of drugs and illicit substances among youths in Northern Nigeria, warning that the trend has evolved into a national crisis threatening the region’s social and moral fabric.
During a one-day campaign against drug abuse held on Tuesday at the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, the National Coordinator of the CNG, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described the group’s ongoing advocacy tour across northern states to combat the worsening epidemic and promote value reorientation among young people.
While citing data from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Charanchi revealed that officials in Niger State informed the coalition that over 50 percent of Nigerian students are involved in drug use.
He further disclosed that in Kano State alone, the NDLEA intercepted more than five million tramadol pills in a single month, warning that such seizures represent only a fraction of the narcotics in circulation.
