Oyedele with President Tinubu
By Abubakar Yunusa
The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee has denied reports that the Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, admitted errors in Nigeria’s new tax laws, describing such claims as misleading.
In a statement shared on Oyedele’s X account, the committee said the reports misrepresented the minister’s remarks and created a false narrative around the new tax framework.
The clarification followed media reports on April 11 suggesting that Oyedele acknowledged errors in the tax laws and indicated that a finance bill would be used to address them.
However, the committee maintained that such interpretations distorted his actual position.
It noted that while discrepancies were mentioned, they were attributed to the law-making process rather than flaws in the tax laws themselves.
According to the committee, Oyedele had explained that the errors arose from manual processes and multiple stages of legislative review.
“Our attention has been drawn to misleading media reports claiming that the Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, has ‘finally admitted errors in the new tax laws,’” the statement read.
The committee added that some publications falsely suggested the minister asked Nigerians to await a legislative probe.
It stressed that such a process had already been concluded, with gazetted copies certified by the National Assembly published since early January 2026.
“These publications misrepresent the Minister’s statements, falsely alleging that he urged Nigerians to await the outcome of a ‘legislative probe’, a process that has long been concluded,” the statement added.
The committee warned that the misleading reports risk confusing the public and undermining the intent of the ongoing tax reforms.
It described the narrative as unhelpful and called for accurate representation of official statements.
