Kano State government has hosted a strategic side event at the ongoing COP30 Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil, where it showcased Kano’s growing leadership in climate action on the global stage.
Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, the Kano Commissioner Ministry of Environment & Climate Change, who hosted the strategic side event in Belém, said in a statement that he presented the remarkable progress recorded under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf of the state.
The Commissioner said during the session, he presented the state government’s progress, particularly in the areas of climate governance, waste management, circular economy development, erosion control, afforestation, and subnational climate finance readiness.
He disclosed that he emphasized the strong institutional reforms implemented by the ministry, “our fast-rising national ranking, and the tangible results that are strengthening resilience across our communities.”
“I also highlighted our renewed commitment to work hand-in-hand with partners, investors, development agencies, and NGOs to scale ongoing interventions and co-create new solutions that will secure a safer, greener, and more climate-resilient Kano State.
“ As part of the day’s activities, the Ministry convened a panel discussion titled Digital Governance and Youth Innovation in Rewiring Climate Future. The conversation brought together representatives of the Kano State Government, private sector, civil society, and the Federal Ministry of Environment to reflect on the critical role of young people and digital systems in accelerating climate leadership.
“ The panel shared practical pathways through which institutions, communities, and citizens can contribute to building a better Kano—one that protects both present and future generations,” Dr Hashim said.
He stated that Kano state remains firmly committed to driving climate solutions that inspire confidence, create opportunities, adding that it positions itself as a hub for sustainable development in Nigeria and the Sahel.
