A quarter of a century of waiting came to a triumphant end on Saturday night as Coventry City secured a historic 1–0 victory away at Nottingham Forest. The win not only marks the Sky Blues’ first Premier League points of the 2026–27 campaign following four straight opening defeats, but also delivers their first top-flight goal and victory in 25 years.
The breakthrough moment arrived in the 55th minute. Capitalizing on a long clearance from goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, defender Jay Dasilva controlled the ball with a brilliant touch before driving a composed finish past Matz Sels. The strike ended a goal drought stretching back to the club’s top-flight relegation era in 2001, igniting wild celebrations among the traveling Sky Blues support.
Nottingham Forest pressed furiously for a late equalizer, creating multiple nerve-wracking moments inside the Coventry penalty box. Bobby Thomas made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Igor Jesus, while Rushworth was called into action with several key saves.
The defining flashpoint occurred in the 86th minute when Igor Jesus turned the ball into the net from close range. However, following a VAR review, referee Jarred Gillett was called to the pitchside monitor and ruled out the equalizer due to a foul on Coventry’s Caleb Yirenkyi in the buildup.
The hard-fought victory lifts Frank Lampard’s Coventry City off the bottom of the table and into 18th place with 3 points, providing a massive psychological boost. Nottingham Forest remain in 12th position with 5 points from five matches.
Coventry will look to build on this momentum when they host Newcastle United at the Coventry Building Society Arena following the upcoming schedule gap.
