Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service yesterday revealed that substantial quantity of military camouflage uniform and boots were intercepted and seized from smugglers at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), in Kano.
The Area Controller of Customs in charge of Kano/Jigawa, Abbas Umar told Journalists in Kano that the Command had also made seizure of contraband,
Umar, who was not categorical on the identity of the smugglers of military uniforms, disclosed that top military authority had since taken charge of further investigation on the matter.
“Of course, the Customs made the seizure at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, due to the security implication; but the case has been transferred to the military”, the Controller pointed.
Umar, who spoke during a stakeholders’ forum in Kano, hinted that Kano, Jigawa Customs Area Command have suppressed activities of smugglers in the axis, adding that no efforts would be spared in blocking all illegal business activities and secure duties in the states under its command.
The Controller added that the Command has so far generated over N2 billion in the last seven months out of the revenue target of N4.2 billion.
He noted that the stakeholders’ forum was part of Customs measures to enlighten the business community on the new guidelines and procedures on import and export trade as well as benefits derivable.
“Since I assumed duty, the command has been marking progressive improvement on revenue generation and suppression of smuggling, which is our primary assignment in addition to security duties. All the achievements could not have been possible without the support of Nigerian Customs service management and the cooperation of our agencies and other stakeholders”. Umar said.
