The Delta State Government on Wednesday expressed fears of the unknown following suspected cases of cholera discovered in three local government areas of the state
Although no death has been reported in the suspected cases, there are strong indications that the disease might unsettle the three council areas if urgent steps are not taken to check the situation.
Speaking with our correspondent, the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency ( DSPHCDA), Director in Charge of Community Health Service in the Agency, Dr Paul Yinkore, said that the suspected cases of Gastroenteritis ( cholera) outbreak in some parts of the state might portend deaths if not properly checked, adding the disease had spread across Bomadi, Burutu and Warri South West areas
While warning that Delta State residents should beware of what they eat and drink in order not to fall victim of the disease, Dr Yinkore said some of the things people are supposed to do are not far-fetched from the COVID-19 protocols which entailed washing of hands and keeping social distancing as well as the use of hand sanitizers” disclosing that the symptoms of the water borne disease include stooling and vomiting.
Yinkore. affirming a recorded similar outbreak in Kogi state and some other states in the federation, warned that while the state government was playing its part by engaging a multi approach system and rendering free services, citizens should also play their part by ensuring that they do the needful, adding that” I can conveniently tell you that it has spread to three local government areas. It’s still spreading, and as at Saturday, I heard one death was recorded in Warri South West, Oko Ogbele Community is one prone to cholera, but I have not confirm the death of the one person. We need to do everything possible to arrest the situation and ensure residents are free from the situation”
He, however, emphasized the influx of adulterated sachet water people consumed, explaining that it was a serious risk factor to cholera outbreak, adding that” We have earlier held a meeting and mobilization meeting geared towards sensitizing members of the public on the need to get the oral polio vaccine which is billed to commence soon. We have received reported cases of polio outbreak in Udu local government areas and vaccination will start between January 22 and 25 ,2021”
