From Nosa Akenzua, Asaba
A combined team of vigilantes in Ubulu Uku Community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta state on Tuesday in the early hours arrested twenty six suspected herdsmen at the community’s various farmlands.
Chairman of the vigilante group, Mr James Adoh who confirmed this to our correspondent in Asaba, said that the suspects were arrested with cutlasses and sticks, disclosing that they were handed over to Ogwashi Uku Police Division for further investigation.
He said,” the suspects were arrested at various farmlands of our people who met them with their cows destroying their farm crops, they were handed over to Ogwashi Uku Police Division, the suspects were arrested with cutlasses and sticks including what appeared to be charms and when they were asked they refused to speak, rather they were speaking Hausa to themselves and we collectively dragged them to the Police.”
Recall that Ogwashi Uku, Ubulu Uku and Ubulu Unor communities had been under siege of hoodlums and suspected Fulani herdsmen over the years with many persons allegedly murdered and housewives in their farmlands raped, thereby leaving residents and the people the areas in the fear of the unknown.
But at Ogwashi Uku Police Division, the Police declined comments and referred our correspondent to the state Command where the Police Commissioner, Hafiz Muhammed Inuwah confirmed that the suspects were arrested and interrogated with investigation ongoing and dispelled as untrue the killing of persons in the area.
Speaking further, the vigilante chairman said that the vigilante members were working with the police to ensure that criminals are brought to arrest in the state, especially in the areas.
