Disassociate self from hate speech bill, CITAD advises Buhari

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has urged President Muhammad Buhari to disassociate himself from bill proposed by the Nigerian Senate to regulate the social media named as protection from internet false hood and manipulation bill.
This was contained in a speech delivered to news men by the CITAD Executive Director YZ Ya’u yesterday in Dutse, the state capital.
”We should also condemn the reintroduction of the Bill on Hate Speech with its provision of death penalty for hate speech, which we think is all in the same vein of restriction the freedom of expression of Nigerians,” he stated.
The executive director, who described the bill as a calculated attempt to gag the Media, urged the national assembly to as a matter of public interest and respect of democratic principles to withdraw the proposed bill.
CITAD also urged the general public and media houses to engage the Nigerian senate in a peaceful and lawful manner to ensure the withdrawal of the bill.
He called on all civil society organisations and lovers of democracy in the country to rise up and condemn the bill and speak out to their representatives not to support the bill should the senate refused to step it down.
