Don blames dearth of qualitative education on abolition of teacher training colleges

A University Don, Dr. Danladi Yunusa Hakimihas has attributed the abolition of Teacher Training Colleges in the country to be responsible for the dearth of qualitative and professional teachers at the basic education level.
Dr. Danladi Yunusa Hakimi who is with the Federal University of Technology, Minna stated this in a chat with newsmen in Birnin Kebbi the capital of Kebbi State.
He said that, the situation has continued to affect the quality of students churned out yearly from the Nigeria tertiary Institutions.
Dr.Hakimi who was also an associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and seasoned educationalist urged all stakeholders in the education sectors to pay serious attention to basic education from where the raw materials are sourced.
“You see our basic education as the foundation of education which has faced serious neglect while they expecting a formidable structure from virtually faulty foundation was unrealistic,” he added.
Dr.Hakimi who was in Kebbi on a research purpose said as a permanent member four in the Niger State basic Education Board NSUBEB also attributed decline in the quality of students in our public, primary and secondary schools to lack of effective monitoring of the teaching staff as it was being done in private schools, adding that efforts should be made by the Northern Governor’s on restructuring the education systems.
Dr. Hakimi commended the effort of the Kebbi State Governor as well as the Niger State in rescuing Basic education in their states by initiating programmes and policies.
“They were able to succeed through the whole school development approach and for addressing the issue of unqualified and unprofessional Teachers by establishing Teachers Professional training Institute at Mararaban Dandaudu in Munya Local Government area of the State” he said.
He then admonished all the stakeholders in the education sector to partner with the State Governments on the school feeding programme introduced by the federal government, for the programme to succeed.
