Don says physical education compulsory in Nigerian schools

A lecturer in the Department of Physical and Heath Education at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) College of Education Zuba, Dr Toyyibat Odunola Bello, has said that Physical Education was mandatory in Nigerian schools time-table.
Dr Bello who stated this while presenting the 1st inaugural lecture of the College with the theme “Physical Education and Sport: One Size Fits All” on Thursday at the institution’s multipurpose hall, noting that Physical Education in our primary school faced so many hiccups ranging from inadequate facilities and equipment among others.
She said: “Physical Education in secondary schools consist of both theory and practical with a specialist teacher handling the subject”.
She further added: “As we know not many schools are sitting for it at West African School Certificate (WASCE),the Nigerian Education Examinations Council (NECO) and Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination”.
According to her, the role of educational institutions in the development of Physical Education and Sport in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized.
She explained that primary and secondary schools provided the chance for young Nigerians to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills in physical activities at curial stage of their lives.
While commenting on the significance of Physical Education in schools, she said Physical Education targeted at developing physical fitness and ability to perform as well enjoy every day physical activities with ease.
