Drama as impeached Kebbi Speaker resumes his seat

Date:

From Ahmed Idris, Birnin-Kebbi

There was mild drama at the Kebbi House of Assembly yesterday as the impeached Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Musa Habibu Jega, appeared in the Assembly complex to resume office after securing an exparte motion from a High Court sitting in Birnin Kebbi.

It would be recalled that Justice Ismaila Haruna of the Kebbi High court last weekend ordered the assembly to maintain the status quo via a motion exparte

The exparte  motion in addition also  favoured the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Garba Bena, the Majority Leader, Alhaji Aliyu Mera and Chief Whip, Hon. Bello Relisco.

The Imbroglio started barely two weeks ago when the affected officers defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pitch tent with the opposition APC, which didn’t go down well with the government that allegedly ordered for their impeachment.

The duo of Alhaji Hassan Shallah Gwandu and Hon Jafar Mohammed were then appointed as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively to run the affairs of the assembly.

However and in his reaction on the empasse, Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General in the State Ministry of Justice, Aminu Usman, said “We have not been served with that exparte motion and we don’t even know from which court this motion is obtained and who the judge was”.

“So you can understand that if at all there was such sitting then we are not represented” adding  that the “government would go to court to challenge him because we don’t know what he told the court”

He added that the former Speaker was alleged to have removed the mace from the assembly to a hidden place, which he said made him culpable of a grievous offense.
