Driver docked for stealing meat, palm wine

Crime_01The police have arraigned a commercial taxi driver, Stephen Iheaha, 42, in an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ court for stealing bush meat and palm wine worth N30, 000.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Jerry Tangshak of Nyanya Police Station, told the court that one Miss Sandra Oliver boarded the accused’s vehicle from Uke to Nyanya, Mararaba, Nasarawa State at an agreed fare of N150.

Tangshak alleged that Oliver alighted from the cab in Nyanya and gave the accused a N500 note, but he said that he had no change.

He said that in order to help the accused, Oliver went round some people nearby looking for change.

But when she returned, the complainant discovered that the accused had driven away with her bush meat and palm wine in his car boot.

The prosecutor said that the accused was arrested on Thursday by men of the Nyanya Police Station, where the complainant reported the case.

According to him, the offence contravenes section 287 of the Penal code.

If convicted, he faces five years in prison or an option of fine or both.

Iheaha pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chief Magistrate Hadiza Dodo granted the accused bail for N50, 000 to a surety in like sum that must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

Dodo adjourned the case to April 14 for continuation of hearing. (NAN)
