The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a health alert following Nigeria’s report of a case of the Ebola virus.
In the alert, published on October 21, the US Mission in Nigeria described Ebola as a serious health concern, noting that “Ebola is a rare, severe, and often fatal hemorrhagic fever illness.”
The Mission explained that public health officials are currently conducting contact tracing following the reported case.
The Embassy urged travelers to consult health guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and to take necessary precautions against possible exposure to the virus.
Individuals were advised to visit the CDC’s Ebola information page and its Nigeria travel health page for updated guidance.
Furthermore, the embassy advised individuals who may be at risk to contact their healthcare providers prior to presenting for medical care if they experience symptoms consistent with the disease.
Travelers were also encouraged to continue taking prescribed malaria preventive medications as recommended by their physicians, noting that malaria symptoms can closely resemble those of Ebola and trigger avoidable health alarms.
Additionally, the alert urged individuals returning from areas experiencing an Ebola outbreak to monitor their health for 21 days post-travel.
For broader health information, the US Embassy referred travelers to the US Department of State’s Nigeria country page.
It also directed individuals to the embassy’s directory of medical providers and encouraged travelers to check with their insurance providers regarding medical evacuation coverage in the event of illness abroad.
