Date:

From Adesoji Oyinlola, Lagos

To further contain the spread of Ebola and other contagious related diseases resulting from poor sanitary habits in our communities particularly in market places, the Lagos State Government has handed over 6 Communal Solar Powered Toilets to the popular Oluwo Fish Market in Epe Local Government.

The Commissioner for Rural Development, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi during the handing over said the toilets were provided for the traders and buyers to curb open defecation in the market and also safe guard the health of the people.

He charged them to always wash their hands regularly after the use of the toilets and before touching the food sold in the market.

Ojelabi also enjoined the market leaders to form a management committee to look into ways of managing the toilets for sustainability without which he said the toilets will be useless.

The Head of Rural Water and Sanitation Department in the Ministry of Rural Development Engr. Adisa Yinusa whose department constructed the toilets said the State government decided to intervene with the construction of the toilets due to requests by the market leaders.

He said that the toilets was powered with solar energy due to the non-availability of power supply to Epe Community by Eko distribution adding that this will reduce the cost of maintenance of the toilet by the community considering the high cost of diesel also.

Yinusa therefore charged the markets women and men to reciprocate the gesture of the State Government by ensuring its sustainability.

The Chairman of the Community Development Committee in Epe Local Government Chief Yinka Tobun while thanking the State Government for the project and other lofty projects in the community particularly the market, charged the market leaders to ensure that the toilets are well maintained at all times for sustainability.
