A popular farmer based in Edo State, Titus Ajayi, has lamented the absence of gardens in both primary and secondary schools in the State.
He cited poor understanding of practical Agricultural Science and apathy for agriculture by most pupils and students especially in the urban centre.
He said this during a public presentation of his book titled: “God is a farmer” at the weekend in Benin City, Edo State.
According to him, “when we took the survey to Secondary Schools, we discovered that the importance of agriculture is more embedded in the Secondary Schools’ Curriculum.
“Most of the secondary schools used as a case study, we collated data and carried out analysis, there were no school garden. The students that were interviewed during our survey did not even know that their schools are supposed to have a farm or garden for practical agricultural Science.
Ajayi, said he arrived at the conclusion after a detailed research in January on the road map to food sufficiency in Nigeria by activating farm settlement and extension services to aid training and retraining programmes for farmers.
