The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday in Ilorin inaugurated a Zero Tolerance for Corruption (ZTC) Club at the University of Ilorin. Inaugurating the club, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, the EFCC Chairman, advised youths to shun corruption and join the fight against economic and financial crimes. The chairman said the crusade was the only way of creating a better future for them.
Lamorde, who was represented by Hajiya Aisha Musa, the commission’s Head of Enlightenment and Re-orientation, noted that corruption remains the bane of Nigeria’s development.
He challenged the students to lead the fight against the scourge, advising them to use the Internet judiciously and positively and also advised them to avoid negative activities that could attract stiff punishment under the law.
“Let it be made clear that the ZTC is neither a parallel university or student administration nor an investigative body. We expect that you reports to us whatever information you have on corrupt practices anywhere, and such reports will be treated in strict confidence and very professionally,” he said.
He told the students to regard themselves as change agents and anti-corruption vanguards of the EFCC.
He commended the authorities of the University for the beautiful campus environment, adding that he could perceive the transparency and accountability in the institution.
“The University is extremely neat; for us in EFCC, where there is transparency and accountability; where there is neatness, shows everybody in the university has what is called integrity and is uprightness.”
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, commended the EFCC for setting up the club, saying it would complement the activities of the anti-corruption and transparency monitoring unit.
Ambali, who espoused the ideals of an “Omoluabi” (a person of excellent character), said the university “places emphasis on character because learning without character is destructive and counter-productive’’. (NAN)
