Egypt is in talks with Saudi Arabia over a possible joint World Cup bid to host the top competition in 2030, Mohamed Fawzi, spokesman for Egypt’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, said on Thursday.
British newspaper The Times revealed on Thursday that Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Greece are considering making a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup.
“Yes, there are talks between Egypt and Saudi Arabia over a possible joint bid for hosting the World Cup 2030,” Mohamed Fawzi told Egyptian sports site Filgoal on Thursday.
“Talks between Egypt and Saudi Arabia are frequent in all sports domains as a part of the good relations that link the two sisterly countries,” he added
Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy participated on Thursday in the Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers held in Saudi Arabia.
“Egypt organised more than 160 sports events during the last period and the country has the necessary sports infrastructure such as the Olympic village in the New Administrative Capital and another one set to be constructed in Alexandria.”
“We inaugurated a new stadium for the Suez Canal Authority and we are considering building another one in a coastal city. So, we are capable of hosting the World Cup,” Fawzi concluded.
Egypt hosted the FIFA U-17 World Championship in 1997 and the U-20 World competition in 2009.
Egypt made a single bid to host the 2010 World Cup but they failed as South Africa won the vote.
