The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) and the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) have signed a memorandum of understanding( MOU), to deploy biotechnology, including biogas technology, in abattoirs and related facilities across Nigeria.
The partnership seeks to strengthen environmental health protection, improve waste management and apply biotechnology to public health challenges.
The agreements were signed recently at the NBRDA headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Registrar of EHCON, Dr. Yakubu Mohammed Baba, said the partnership would provide innovative solutions to environmental challenges while transforming waste management into opportunities for wealth creation and employment.
Baba said the collaboration would harness the agencies’ technological and research capacities to benefit Nigerians in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Director-General of NBRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, welcomed the partnership and commended EHCON for formalising cooperation between the agencies.
He emphasised the application of biotechnology to environmental sanitation, waste-to-wealth initiatives and sustainable energy generation. Mustapha disclosed that NBRDA had developed technology with potential applications in abattoirs and related facilities and was ready to support its deployment and implementation.
The event featured the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the development, training and deployment of biogas technology in abattoirs and related facilities in Nigeria, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in biotechnology for environmental and public health protection.
In a vote of thanks, representatives of both agencies commended the leadership and commitment behind the partnership, expressing optimism that it would improve waste management, promote biogas generation and enhance public health protection.
