Eid-el-Maulud: Let mercy become action, CAN tells Nigerians

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has urged Nigerians to turn the values of Prophet Muhammad’s life into concrete actions as the country marks Eid-el-Maulud.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN felicitated with Muslim faithful and prayed for peace and blessings upon their families and communities.

According to CAN, Eid-el-Maulud commemorates the birth of the Prophet of Islam and offers a moment to reflect on mercy, justice, compassion for the poor and vulnerable, honesty, and peaceful coexistence.

“For us as Nigerians, these values are especially important today,” Okoh said. “They challenge us to care for one another, protect human dignity and pursue peace, even when our differences are exploited for political or personal gain.”

The CAN president noted that the celebration comes at a difficult time, with many Nigerians grappling with rising living costs and insecurity.

“People are tired of promises. They want to see their lives improve,” he said.

He therefore called on the Federal Government and leaders at all levels to move from rhetoric to visible action.

“Nigerians need greater security, economic relief and leadership that puts their welfare first. Leadership is not measured by what we promise, but by what Nigerians can see and feel,” Okoh stated.

With the 2027 elections approaching, CAN also appealed to politicians not to exploit religion or ethnicity for political advantage.

“Elections will come and go, but the bonds that hold Nigeria together must remain,” the statement added.

CAN further urged Christians and Muslims to reject attempts to divide them and instead work together to protect communities, care for the vulnerable, and promote peace.

“I remain hopeful about Nigeria, but our hope must be backed by action — responsible leadership, good citizenship and justice,” Okoh said.
