Ekiti guber: PDP holds primaries Saturday

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti state, the party has scheduled its primary for Saturday while it holds its ward congress tomorrow.

These were the decisions reached by the leadership of the party after a closed door meeting with the aspirants and other stakeholders just as attempts to make the aspirants to agree on a consensus arrangement failed.

It was gathered that while majority of the aspirants reportedly agreed for the consensus arrangement as muted by the President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the National leader of the party, a former Governor of the state, Mr Ayo Fayose was said to have insisted on primaries for the best candidate to emerge for the election.

Speaking with news men after the closed door meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party with the aspirants and other stakeholders, the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh said they would organise primary election for the aspirants if they could not totally agree on a consensus arrangement among themselves in line with the party’s constitution.

Metuh explained that the party would only support the consensus arrangement if all the aspirants agreed among themselves but once one or two disagree, the party would have no option than to organize a transparent, free and fair primaries for the delegates to elect the party’s flag bearer among the lots.

He said in line with this position, the ward congresses for the selection of the party’s delegates for the primaries would hold tomorrow in the state.
