Alhaji Bala Kokani, the Chairman of Kebbe Local Government in Sokoto State yesterday called on Nigerians to refrain from political violence for the emergence of transparent leaders in the country.
Kokani told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto that only peaceful atmosphere, free, fair and credible elections could usher in democratically-elected leaders.
He said that the task ahead for the political class, especially those seeking elective positions, required political solutions that would prevent violence at all levels.
“They must sensitise their followers that elections into political offices is just an opportunity for one to contribute his/her quota towards nation-building,” he said.
Kokani said that political violence and thuggery could only be a thing of the past, if politicians demonstrated politics without bitterness.
He urged the political class to realise that politics must not be regarded as a do-or-die affair.
The politician said that those seeking elective offices must regard it as an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the society.
He called on the leadership of political parties to mobilise their followers to shun all kinds of violence before the beginning of political activities.
He said that the dream of Nigerians to conduct peaceful election would only be a reality in atmosphere of free environment.
Kokani observed that it was only through the political method that good leaders that had the interest of the common man would emerge.
“Nigerian politicians must unite for an enduring peace to prevail, for the overall survival of our democracy by shunning all kinds of violence and thuggery.” (NAN)
