Prominent Nigerian businessman, Tony Elumelu, has responded with laughing emojis to a young Nigerian’s comment about his fashion choice after a photograph of him wearing distinctive jeans sparked online banter.
The exchange began on October 9, 2026, when media entrepreneur and Ovation magazine publisher, Dele Momodu, shared a photograph of himself with Elumelu on X, formerly Twitter.
Momodu captioned the photograph, “Just ran into the banking Titan and showbiz impresario.”
Elumelu was seen wearing light-blue jeans and a black shirt in the photograph, prompting reactions from social media users.
One X user, identified as 6 Foot Piscean, reposted the photograph and joked about how young Nigerians might be judged for wearing similar outfits.
“If you wear this kind jean meet Elumelu, dem go say you no serious with your life 😂,” the user wrote.
The comment suggested that a young person wearing the same style might be considered unserious, while a prominent business leader wearing it could attract a different reaction.
Elumelu later responded to the post with two laughing emojis, adding to the humour surrounding the exchange.
His brief reaction drew further attention to the conversation, which centred on perceptions of fashion, age and social status.
The exchange also highlighted the double standards that can arise when people judge clothing choices differently depending on who wears them.
However, the post and Elumelu’s response did not establish whether the businessman intended to address the wider issue beyond the humour of the comment.
