Local meter manufacturers decry low patronage from DiscosBy Musa Adamu

The federal government through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed that it would try harder to increase access to meters and reduce the incidents of estimated billing.
Speaking at the 23rd Monthly meeting of the power operators in Lafia, Nasarawa state, Minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, said NERC was about concluding the meter regulations to open up the meters supply and installation business.
He also revealed that efforts were on to put together a policy position to help expand the distribution network of the DisCos.
He explained that the expansion would use this to distribute the 2000MW that is currently available but cannot be distributed.
He said: “I also use the opportunity to call out to manufacturers to let us know where they are, how much power they need, and how we can connect you because we have 2000 MW of undistributed power.”
He also used the meeting to announce that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had completed the repairs on the damaged gas supply network around Okada.
He recalled that a few months ago the NERC had formally presented the Mini Grid Regulations to the meeting and that its impact was beginning to manifest.
“Last month in Abuja, Nigeria through the Rural Electrification Agency hosted a Mini Grids Summit that is the largest ever attended in Africa with 600 participants from about 40 Countries.“The word is spreading around the world as mini grids will help us connect more people and boost incremental power.”
