From Ahmad Muhammad, Bauchi
A former member of the House of Representatives (HoR) from Bauchi State, Hon.Aminu Mohammed Danmaliki, has reacted to viral reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning sweeping constitutional changes, including renaming the country and abolishing Sharia criminal law.
In a press statement titled “My Position on the Viral ‘Project True Federation’ Report,” Danmaliki—who also serves as the President of the Bauchi State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (BACCIMA)—admitted that the claims initially caused widespread anxiety, particularly across Northern Nigeria.
The viral report alleged that the presidency intends to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria,” remove Sharia criminal law from the constitution, and fundamentally restructure the federation.
While acknowledging that public concern over the sensitive issues is understandable, Danmaliki urged Nigerians to separate facts from emotions to prevent unnecessary regional, religious, or political tension.
He pointed out that there is currently no credible evidence to support the claims.
“The Presidency has reportedly denied the existence of such a proposal, and until credible evidence is presented, Nigerians should avoid conclusions that may unnecessarily heighten tensions,” Danmaliki stated.
The former lawmaker emphasized that matters concerning Sharia law, federalism, religious freedom, and resource control are deeply sensitive pillars of the nation.
He maintained that any future constitutional reforms touching these areas must be handled with the utmost responsibility and must be preceded by thorough, inclusive national dialogue rather than speculation.
