Borno state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), yesterday disclosed that family members of six slain teachers of Government Secondary School Dikwa, killed by members of the Boko Haram members sect, two months ago are still in the custody of the insurgents.
Deputy Chairman of the union, Comrade Bako Lawan disclosed this to Governor Kashim Shettima, while leading his members to the Government House in Maiduguri, to protest the abduction of over 200 Chibok schoolgirls.
Comrade Lawan told Governor Shettima that after the insurgent attacked the school and killed six teachers in the middle of March, it was later discovered that the assailants had abducted families of their victims.
He said since the incident, the whereabouts of the kidnapped families of the slain teachers remained unknown.
He also said that no fewer than 170 primary and secondary schools teachers were so far killed by Boko Haram in various parts of the state.
He decried the continuous closure of schools in the state due to the activities of the Boko Haram sect.
Comrade Lawan called on the Federal and the Borno state government to provide adequate security in all schools or teachers will remain at home even when the schools are re-opened.
He also called on the state to compensate the fallen teachers and also delivered a protest letter on the abduction to Governor Kashim Shettima to be delivered to the president, Goodluck Jonathan.
While addressing the teachers, Governor Shettima said the 170 teachers died fighting the right cause.
“Education is the fundamental right of each and every child in this country and in this world, it is so sad that in this century so people want us to backslide into primitive, they want us to be using hoes and cutlasses.
They want us to go back and be using only herbs for medication but ironically these lunatics are using guns and ammunition’s produced using modern technology to kill innocent souls, what a contradictory” he said.
He called on the people to remain focus saying that “our goal now is how to get back our girls safe and alive”.
