The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, in collaboration with the FCT Administration (FCTA), has announced a revitalized and indefinite phase of “Operation Sweep” aimed at cleansing the nation’s capital of criminal elements.
The inter-agency operation, which comprises the military, police, DSS, Civil Defense, and various paramilitary organizations, is designed to enhance security synergy and address newly observed criminal patterns within the territory.
Speaking to the collective security team, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, Friday emphasized that the operation is strictly targeted at criminals and not any specific religious, ethnic, or cultural group.
CP Sanusi stated: ”Crime has no tribe, has no religion, and has no culture. It affects each and every one of us.
“Our mandate is to face criminals and criminality at whatever form and level.”
The Commissioner assured residents that the forces are not out to harass or intimidate law-abiding citizens but to “flush out” those attempting to cluster and cause havoc.
He further noted that the operation will remain active indefinitely—”for as long as the FCT remains”—to ensure total coverage across all area councils and neighboring states.
The FCTA Director of Security, Adamu Gwary, highlighted that the operation has the full backing of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to ensure the FCT remains a safe haven during high-profile events.
He noted that key priorities for the current phase of the operation includeproviding effective coverage for the upcoming Sallah celebrations, scheduled to take place in approximately two weeks, maintaining order as political activities begin to pick up in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, and ensuring that every activity in the FCT goes on smoothly, with no area being “insulated” from security sweeps.
Authorities have urged residents of the FCT and the international community to support the mission by providing “credible and actionable intelligence”.
The FCTA maintained that this “totality activity” is essential for bringing peace and tranquility to the capital as it prepares for significant upcoming national milestones.
