The Federation of International Women Lawyers, FIDA has yesterday advocated that rapist should be sentenced to death and taken off the streets of Nigeria.
Leader of FIDA, Kaduna State chapter, Barrister Annie Yellowe disclosed this at a two day workshop organized by African Ethics and Theatre Reformation Initiative, AETRI, in Kaduna state.
According to her, rapists are worse than murderers and should live within society, saying their challenge is how to prove rape case in court.
“Our greatest challenge is that it is difficult to prove cases of rape. The law on rape should be reviewed because as it is now it is difficult to prove the case of rape. Because if you don’t bring that person in that form it is difficult to prove.
“FIDA have taken one or two cases on rape and it is on record that one is sentenced for 6 months.
“The parents too don’t help matter because of the stigmatization they tend to keep the case to themselves. And the victims are left traumatized for the rest of their life.
“Rapist should be killed; if not, why would you rape a minor of 3 or 6 months? They are worse than a murderer and so, they are not fit to live in the society,” she said.
FIDA further said educating female child is of advantage to the nation than a male child.
Also in his remarks, Legal Officer with National Human Right Commission, Emereole Bismack Laura expressed worry that child right acts is yet to be passed into law in Kaduna State while on daily basis the right of children are been abused.
The Executive Director of AETRI, Prince Oscar said the two days workshop is borne out of need to address contemporary issues around the youths and society which breeds violence in the society and the country at large.
