The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold at Nigerian National Petroleum Company filling stations across the country.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Oyedele said the measure was designed to provide relief to motorists, with priority given to operators of public transportation.

“There’ll be a discount on NNPC petrol for the next 30 days, with priority for public transporters,” the minister said.

He also disclosed that the Federal Government had reached an agreement on a “negotiated landing cost” for petrol.

According to him, the negotiated landing cost would be reviewed monthly.

The announcement comes amid continued concerns over the impact of petrol prices on transportation costs and household expenses.

Although the minister did not disclose the amount of the discount or the exact pump price that motorists would pay under the arrangement, the measure is expected to apply to NNPC filling stations nationwide for the stated 30-day period.

The government’s decision to prioritise public transporters is also expected to focus the intervention on commuters, who have continued to bear the impact of higher transport costs.

Further details on the implementation of the discount were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
