Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has called for increased participation of women in politics, urging female aspirants to strengthen grassroots engagement and take advantage of existing electoral frameworks to advance their ambitions.
The governor made the call in Katsina while hosting members of the ‘Reserve Seat for Women Movement’, a political advocacy group led by his wife, Zulaihat Radda.
Radda emphasised that sustained involvement in the political process, even in the face of setbacks, remains essential for building credibility and long-term success. He noted that consistency and dedication often shape the level of acceptance aspirants receive from political stakeholders.
He also drew attention to provisions within Nigeria’s electoral framework, particularly options such as consensus and direct primaries, urging women to better understand and utilise these mechanisms to their advantage.
The governor further stressed the need for discipline and decorum in political activities, describing them as vital to gaining public trust.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Bashir Gambo-Saulawa, said women accounted for a significant share of voters in recent elections, assuring that the party remains committed to expanding their role in the political space.
He disclosed that the party had approved a 50 per cent reduction in nomination fees for female aspirants as part of measures to encourage participation.
Also speaking, the state women leader of the party, Aisha Matazu, reiterated the party’s commitment to inclusiveness, while the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Aisha Aminu-Malumfashi, highlighted the importance of women’s involvement in governance and national development.
Earlier, Zulaihat Radda explained that the ‘Reserve Seat for Women Movement’ emerged from the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum as part of broader efforts to promote women’s representation in elective offices.
