The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring zero tolerance for corruption within the Ministry of Transportation, Marine, and Blue Economy.
Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, stated this during the two-day Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) Sensitization Workshop for Staff held in Abuja yesterday.
The workshop’s theme was “Uprooting Corruption and Promoting Honesty and Integrity,” in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC).
Ajani emphasized the ministry’s dedication to the successful implementation of ACTU programs and the selection of quality resource persons to facilitate the program.
She stated, “This administration is focused on the complete eradication of corruption in the transport sector. Corruption is multifaceted and can be described as a form of dishonesty and unethical behavior by individuals entrusted with positions of trust or authority, solely for personal gratification.
“Corruption includes actions such as accepting or offering bribes. Ajani stressed that both taking and offering bribes constitute forms of corruption.”
Ajani expressed optimism that the workshop would yield the desired results, strengthening the values of honesty and integrity within the system. She went on to describe various corrupt actions, such as the diversion of public funds, nepotism, and the misuse of official resources for personal interests, as examples of corruption.
She urged participants to be vigilant, noting that when public resources entrusted for official use are misappropriated for personal purposes, it is considered corruption.
Furthermore, she explained that fraudulent activities, including the misuse of privileged information or materials intended for the public or government, are also forms of corruption when they violate ethical standards.
In his remarks, Musa Aliyu, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses (ICPC), commended the ministry for consistently promoting ethics and transparency within its departments and agencies.
He expressed his appreciation for the ministry’s support for ACTU and encouraged other parastatals and agencies under the ministry to follow the same model.
Adebayo Ubanji, who represented the Chairman, described the ministry’s support for ACTU as a testament to its proactive stance in the fight against corruption.
Aliyu called on the parastatals and agencies under the ministry to adopt similar anti-corruption strategies in their operations, and he encouraged the management to continue these efforts.
