The federal government has inaugurated a technical committee to streamline the existing sorghum varieties and meet food, industrial and export demands in the country.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Ernest Umakhihe, inaugurated the committee in Abuja on Sunday.

Represented by the Director, Federal Department of Agriculture ( FDA), Mrs Karima Babangida, Mr Umakhihe noted that the ministry has been promoting sorghum production and value addition towards self-sufficiency and meeting industrial requirements.

 Nigeria currently ranks 2nd highest sorghum producer in Africa. 

Speaking at the event held at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, the Permanent Secretary tasked stakeholders in the value chain such as  farmers, seed producers and input providers to collaborate in order to achieve set target and become the very highest producer as well as beef up for export and generate revenue for the nation.
