FG, stakeholders, push satellite technology as key to Nigeria’s digital growth, security

Key government officials and industry leaders have underscored the critical role of satellite technology in driving Nigeria’s digital economy, national security and inclusive development.

This was the thrust of conversations at the Nigerian Satellite Week 2026 in Abuja with the theme “Harnessing Space for an Extraordinary Nigeria,”

Speaking at the event, minister of communications, innovation and digital economy, Dr Bosun Tijani said Nigeria must prioritise investment in digital infrastructure, particularly satellite technology, to remain competitive in an increasingly digital global economy.

He noted that while space technology is often perceived as distant, it plays a direct role in everyday life, from enabling rural connectivity and supporting agriculture to enhancing emergency response and business operations.

“Satellite technology sits at the centre of the digital transformation we are witnessing globally. It is not abstract it determines how a child in a rural community accesses the internet, how farmers make critical decisions, and how governments respond to emergencies,” he said.

The minister highlighted ongoing government investments, including plans to deploy additional satellites and expand telecommunications infrastructure to underserved areas, describing them as critical to building a resilient and inclusive digital economy.

In her welcome address, Managing Director, Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen described the Nigerian Satellite Week as a platform to advance Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a major player in the global space economy.

She noted that the 2026 edition coincides with the 20th anniversary of NIGCOMSAT, marking two decades of Nigeria’s entry into space-based communications.

“Twenty years ago, Nigeria made a sovereign decision to claim its place in space. Today, we are not merely reflecting on that milestone—we are defining the next phase of growth and competitiveness,” she said.

According to her, NIGCOMSAT has evolved from a single-satellite operator into a multi-service provider delivering broadband, broadcasting and connectivity services across Nigeria and Africa.

She disclosed that the organisation has recorded significant milestones in recent years, including revenue growth, partnerships with global satellite firms, and expanded collaboration within Africa’s space ecosystem.

Egerton-Idehen also highlighted capacity-building initiatives such as VSAT training programmes and the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme, designed to support startups and drive innovation in satellite applications.

She added that efforts like Project 774 aim to extend connectivity to all local government areas, bridging the digital divide and promoting inclusive development.

In his goodwill message, the Chief of Army Staff, (COAS) Lt.-Gen. W. Shaibu, said the growing importance of space technology in national security operations.

COAS, who was represented by the Commander Nigerian Army Cyber warfare command, Maj Gen Kennedy Osemwegie noted that satellite capabilities have become essential tools for intelligence gathering, surveillance, communication and disaster response.

“The contemporary security environment requires the integration of space-based capabilities into military operations. These technologies enhance situational awareness, decision-making and coordination across theatres of operation,” he said.

He stressed the importance of collaboration among the military, government agencies, academia and private sector players in addressing evolving security threats, including terrorism, insurgency and cross-border crimes.

Stakeholders at the event agreed that sustained investment, stronger partnerships and local innovation will be critical to unlocking the full potential of satellite technology for national development.
