Federal government and stakeholders are pushing for the implementation of an effective national validation for Green Women platform in Nigeria.
The stakeholders emphasized that they want to establish a strong and inclusive platform that empowers Nigerian women to build resilience, restore degraded lands, and foster sustainable livelihoods.
They stated this yesterday during the Green Women Platform Validation Workshop in Abuja .
Speaking in his keynoted address, Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal said
the Green Women Platform is a unique innovation of the Pan-African Great Green Wall, designed to place women at the center of the fight against desertification, climate change, land degradation and livelihood.
“Here in Nigeria, women are not only custodians of the land but also agents of transformation within their communities” .
The Minister represented by Director Planning, Research and Statistics, Aneke Agnes said Thr validation workshop allows us to finalize the GWP’s national framework that define its governance structures, and agree on a practical two-year action plan to guide implementation.
He explained that the Green Women Platform connects strongly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“ It speaks to Goal 5 on gender equality by ensuring women’s full participation in environmental decision-making”.
He said, by validating and operationalizing this platform, we are also positioning Nigeria strategically as we prepare for COP30 in Brazil, where inclusive, community-driven models of climate action will take center stage.
He said Nigerian women are not simply victims of climate change, but leaders of climate solutions. They are not passive beneficiaries, but innovators and decision-makers. They are not on the sidelines, but at the very center of the Great Green Wall.
Earlier in his welcome address, Director General/CEO, Saleh Abubakar said the Green Women Platform is a unique innovation of the Pan-African Great Green Wall, designed to place women at the center of the fight against desertification, climate change, land degradation and livelihood.
He said this validation workshop allows us to finalize the GWP’s national framework, define its governance structures, and agree on a practical two-year action plan to guide implementation.
The GWP is a flagship initiative designed to drive women-led environmental restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods across the country.
The workshop brought women from various work place .The theme is “Ensuring Women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for successful Great Green Wall Initiative implementation”.
