A District Court in Finland has sentenced Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Government in Exile, to six years in prison for terrorism-related offenses.
The ruling comes after a lengthy investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into his alleged role in inciting violence in southeastern Nigeria.
Ekpa, who was arrested on November 21, 2024, faced charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.
Finnish prosecutors argued that his online activities between August 2021 and November 2024 fueled unrest and violent attacks in Nigeria.
The court also upheld measures freezing Ekpa’s assets, alongside those of his associates and related companies.
The verdict marks a significant step in international efforts to curb the financing and promotion of terrorism across borders.
Authorities in Finland emphasized that while freedom of speech is protected, it does not extend to incitement of violence or threats to public safety.
