#FixPolitics, the groundbreaking citizens’ movement dedicated to fixing politics and building democracy that works for the people, will mark its 5th anniversary with a commemorative event bringing together leaders, citizens, partners, and changemakers from across Africa and the diaspora, themed “Fixing Nigeria’s Democracy: Youth, Technology, and the End of Political Misogyny.”

Founded in 2019 by Dr. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili, following her fellowship research at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin, #FixPolitics was born out of the conviction that if we fix politics, we can fix Africa. Over the past five years, the movement has grown into a continental force, mobilising citizens, training values-based leaders, and pressing for institutional reform.

The anniversary celebration will reflect on #FixPolitics’ transformative journey through its Triangular Pillars of Democracy:
● Empowered & Engaged Citizens – through political education and campaigns like the Office of the Citizen, which reached over 5 million people during Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

● Values-Based Leadership – through the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG), now established in Nigeria, Senegal, and Kenya, and expanding to Ghana, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.

● Institutional Reform – by advocating for credible elections, accountable governance, and citizen-led reform across the continent.
This year also marks a leadership milestone for the organisation.

From inception, Dr. Ezekwesili has been the founder and guiding light of the movement. In January 2025, Mr. Frank Nweke II, former Federal Minister (Information, Communications, and Intergovernmental Affairs), ex-Director-General of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), and Senior Visiting Fellow at Lagos Business School, was appointed as the new Chair of FixPolitics, ushering in a new era of leadership as the organisation looks ahead to its next five years.

“#FixPolitics at 5 is not just about looking back at how far we’ve come, it is about looking ahead to how much more we must do,” said Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, Founder of #FixPolitics. “Our vision remains clear: to build a new political culture in Africa rooted in service, accountability, and the common good.”

“This milestone is a call to greater responsibility,” added Mr. Frank Nweke II, Chair of #FixPolitics. “The next five years will deepen citizen mobilisation, expand leadership pipelines, and secure reforms that can redefine democracy in Africa.”

The event is slated to be held on Friday, 3rd October 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, Nigeria (with global online participation via Zoom and YouTube).
