The Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE) has warned the Federal Government against excessive taxation, arbitrary levies and weak regulatory engagement, saying current policies could threaten the survival of businesses in Nigeria’s food and beverage sector.
The warning was issued by the President of the association, Chinedum Okereke, during the 47th Annual General Meeting of AFBTE held recently in Lagos.
Okereke described the food and beverage industry as a critical driver of Nigeria’s economy due to its contributions to employment generation, public health and economic growth, stressing that government policies should support the sector rather than stifle it.
According to him, many companies in the industry are battling rising operational costs, multiple taxation and increasing charges imposed by regulatory agencies without adequate consultation with stakeholders.
“The food and beverage sector remains a major player in the Nigerian economy in terms of its criticality to the financial and physical health of the nation, as well as the well-being of the people. Government support is therefore imperative,” he said.
He stressed that effective collaboration, dialogue and fairness between government institutions and private businesses were necessary to create a stable and sustainable business environment.
The AFBTE president also reiterated the association’s opposition to the proposed ban on the packaging and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small PET bottles, warning that such a policy could worsen unemployment, discourage investment and reduce government revenue.
“We are in the age of data and analytics. Policies that affect businesses and livelihoods should be evidence-based,” Okereke stated.
He argued that the industry had repeatedly requested empirical evidence and statistical data to justify the proposed ban, but claimed that the relevant authorities had yet to provide such information.
Okereke further appealed to the Federal Government to introduce incentives and relief measures for manufacturers struggling with rising production costs, foreign exchange challenges and infrastructure deficits.
He also advocated the establishment of more Free Trade Zones through the upgrade of existing industrial clusters, particularly for long-standing companies that have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth but currently face disadvantages compared to firms operating within designated free trade zones.
According to him, the absence of sustained dialogue between regulators and the private sector often leads to avoidable disputes and weakens investor confidence.
