In a move to address humanitarian needs and align with the state’s development priorities, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP-UN) convened a meeting with Local Government Chairmen across the state.
The meeting held on Tuesday aimed to review the WFP Crisis Response for 2024 and collaboratively plan for 2025, and led by the Yobe State ALGON chairman, the engagement brought together key stakeholders to ensure a participatory approach to addressing humanitarian needs.
The engagement’s objectives included reviewing the successes and challenges of the 2024 crisis response interventions, identifying gaps in food security, nutrition, and livelihood support, enhancing collaboration between local government authorities, SEMA, and WFP, and developing strategic action plans for 2025 that reflect local needs and priorities.
While the WFP outlined its activities in 2024, including food distribution, cash-based transfers, and nutrition support programs for vulnerable populations. In other hands, the challenges identified included limited access to hard-to-reach areas due to insecurity and logistical constraints.
In their part, the local Government Chairmen shared insights on the impact of interventions in their respective areas, emphasizing the need for sustained support in conflict-affected and disaster-prone communities. Recommendations included strengthening community-based targeting mechanisms and enhancing monitoring and evaluation to improve accountability.
