A former Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba (retd.), has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing his determination to continue his political career and serve his constituents ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abba announced his decision during a visit to former Jigawa State Governor and PDP founding member, Sule Lamido, in Bamaina, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Explaining his defection, the former police chief recalled his unsuccessful attempt to secure the APC ticket for the Jigawa South-West Senatorial District, saying he was denied participation in the party’s primary election despite meeting the required screening conditions.

He said his move to the PDP followed appeals from supporters who urged him to contest the senatorial seat, expressing confidence that the opposition party would provide a platform where his experience and contributions would be valued.

Receiving the former Inspector-General, Lamido described the defection as a major boost for the PDP, saying Abba’s experience, public service record and political profile would strengthen the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

The former governor also expressed optimism that more politicians would join the PDP, noting the presence of the party’s governorship candidates from Jigawa, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe and Yobe states during the meeting as a sign of increasing political realignment in the region.
