A former director General of Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Prof. Ignatius Ayua (SAN) yesterday blamed the institution’s inability to secure a permanent office complex in Abuja on the confiscation of its allotted parcel of land by former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.
Prof. Ayua, in a remark yesterday in Abuja, at a media awards ceremony as part of activities to mark the 35th year anniversary of the institute lamented the in-adequate funding of the institute, in spite of its enormous contribution to the transformation agenda of the country.
“The institute has been playing a very fundamental role in the transformation of Nigeria. If not for resources, we would have had our own structure here in Abuja. We had a parcel of land in Jabi but it was confiscated by former FCT Minister, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufa and shared among politicians”.
NIALS’ current DG, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), in his remarks, decried the action of the former FCT minister but lauded the efforts of past and present Chief Justices of Nigeria for their generosity in donating the current office accommodation at the Supreme Court to the institute.
Prof. Azinge commended the Attorney General and Minister of Justice for his support and encouragement which led to the achievements recorded so far in the institute.
He thanked the Nigerian media for its enormous support and contributions to the actualization of the NIALS’s objectives.
