The Senate on Wednesday expanded its ranks with the inauguration of four newly elected senators who emerged victorious in recent by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The new are Senators include Danladi Halilu Envulu-Anza (APC Nasarawa North), Ikeje Asogwa (APC Enugu North), Olaka Nwogu (PDP Rivers South) and Francis Faduyile (APC Ondo South).
Their arrival fills vacancies created by deaths and appointments that affected representation in their respective senatorial districts.
Asogwa’s emergence followed the death of , while Nwogu was elected after the passing of . Faduyile replaced , who was appointed Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, while Envulu-Anza succeeded the late .
To accommodate family members, supporters and other distinguished guests, senators temporarily suspended relevant provisions of the chamber’s standing rules. The decision followed a motion sponsored by Senate Leader and seconded by Minority Leader .
Presiding over the ceremony, Senate President welcomed the new members and reminded them of their responsibility to represent the interests of Nigerians.
Following the administration of the Oath of Allegiance by the Clerk of the Senate, the lawmakers formally took their seats in the red chamber, completing the process of their inauguration.
Akpabio also congratulated the political parties that won the by-elections and paid tribute to the deceased lawmakers whose passing necessitated the polls, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.
