Panic has gripped Pampo village in the Kataeregi District of Katcha Local Government Area, Niger State, following a violent clash between herders and farmers that left four people injured.
Trouble reportedly began on Wednesday when a group of herders drove their cattle into a soybean farm.
The owner of the farm attempted to chase the livestock away to prevent them from destroying his crops, leading to a heated argument.
According to local sources, a young herder suddenly attacked the farmer with a dagger.
Hearing his cries for help, nearby farmers rushed to the scene to intervene.
The attacker turned on them as well, inflicting severe injuries on two other farmers before fleeing the area.
In the ensuing confrontation, a fourth individual was also injured.
Among the victims, one farmer sustained a deep cut near his ear and neck, resulting in severe bleeding that required urgent medical intervention.
It was gathered that all four injured individuals were rushed to a hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The outbreak of violence highlights the persistent farmer-herder conflicts in Niger State’s rural areas, where disputes over crop destruction and grazing routes frequently escalate into bloodshed.
Disturbed by the clash, community leaders have called for an increased security presence, stronger conflict-resolution mechanisms, and sustained dialogue to foster peaceful coexistence.
They also appealed to the Niger State Government and security agencies to step up protection for vulnerable farming communities, particularly during the peak farming season when land-use tensions run high.
Security agencies had not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident at the time of filing this report.
