The Kaduna State Government’s decision to distribute 400 trucks of free fertilizers to 100,000 smallholder farmers has generated optimism for a bumper harvest in the state.
This initiative, launched by Governor Uba Sani, aims to enhance food security, reduce agricultural costs, and support rural livelihoods.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, food inflation in Kaduna State rose to 40.87% in June 2024, up from 25.25% in June 2023. The increasing costs of food commodities are contributing to the overall rise in the country’s inflation rate.
Nevertheless, farmers in Kaduna are hopeful for a significant harvest, thanks to the availability of fertilizer and adequate rainfall.
The State Government’s provision of fertilizers, combined with favorable weather conditions, is expected to lead to increased crop yields.
Roseline Samuel, a female farmer from Maro Ward in Kujuru Local Government Area, expressed that the free fertilizer will enhance her farm’s productivity.
Salisu Abubakar, a traditional leader, also praised the government for the initiative, stating that it will help combat food insecurity and alleviate poverty.
However, some residents have raised concerns about the possibility of the fertilizer not reaching the intended farmers.
In Makarfi Local Government Area, the distribution process was halted due to certain irregularities that were discovered.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Murtala Dabo, who also chairs the Distribution Committee, assured the public that measures have been implemented to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process.

Pastor Timothy Dangana emphasized that food security is a critical issue, given the interconnected nature of economic instability, inflation, and access to food.
He stressed that if the fertilizer is effectively managed and applied to the crops, the state could experience a bumper harvest next year, reducing food inflation.
The Kaduna State Government’s free fertilizer distribution initiative has instilled hope for a prosperous harvest. With effective management and distribution, this program has the potential to address high food inflation levels in the state and enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
